Loyola gets the best of Deer Lodge
Source: The Montana Standard, ButteOct.迷你倉 26--Karma is wonderful but sometimes it doesn't have sharp enough horns.Al Cutler's last year as Deer Lodge head football coach has been complete with a seven-game winning streak and a run for one last District 6B title. But on Friday night the Rams of Loyola-Sacred Heart are built champion tough and the defending Class B state titilists proved that Friday night at Ted Rule Memorial Field.A quick start by the Rams helped them to an early, big lead and they would cruise to a 45-17 win to claim the 6B crown and hand the playoff-bound Wardens (7-2) with a loss in most likely their home finale of 2013.They now expect to travel to Fairfield for a first-round state playoff game, yet the final pairings won't be known until Saturday night, so they could still come back to Deer Lodge for a playoff game if they get some help along the way."Football is a very humbling sport because you get used to winning and you think you can't be beat and then this happens," Cutler said. "I couldn't be prouder of these kids and wouldn't trade them for anyone else. We are looking forward to next week and looking forward to winning a couple of games in the playoffs and hopefully send these seniors off right."Loyola took the opening drive of the game and came out with a nice mix of pass and run and at 9:46 of the first quarter Matt McHugh slung a 15-yard pass on a string to Danner Linhart for a score and a 7-0 lead. The Rams (7-0) would force Deer Lodge to go three-and-out on their first offensive set and Loyola would counter quickly.A Marty Pigeon 51-yard run would end in another score and Loyola was up 14-0 at the 6:21 mark.Deer Lodge's third drive was a strong one and they made a dent on the Rams' defense getting within Loyola's red zone before settling for a Lukas Bucholtz 30-yard field goal to pull the Wardens to within 14-3.Then came the back breaker.Pinned on the edge of their own goal line, Loyola went for broke and McHugh flung a perfect, lofty pass that Zach Hollenbeck hauled in and zipped 97-yards for the score and a 21-3 Rams lead 12 seconds before the end of the quarter.A dropped Warden interception in their territory kept a Loyola drive alive and the Rams would make them pay on a 17-yard Eric Williams field goal as time expired to lead 24-3 at the break."It just seemed like we were missing the little things by an inch," Cutler said. "A pass here, a catch there. We had several guys open and drop the ball. We were just off and enough to throself storage the whole thing off."Deer Lodge would stall on offense on their first drive after halftime and Loyola went in for the kill marching down the field for another McHugh to Hollenbeck hook up for a 31-3 lead with 6:43 to go.Loyola scored three minutes later on McHugh's fourth touchdown pass of the game to lead 38-3 and get the clock running via the mercy rule.Deer Lodge did reach paydirt as Tristen Clark's evening long strong performance was rewarded with a three-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Johnston with 4:36 left made it 45-10 Rams.Johnston hit Jacob Simpson on a 50-yard touchdown pass as time expired to wrap the scoring.Johnston finished with 288 yards passing with Clark leading the Wardens with nine catches for 147 yards. Deer Lodge was held to 54 yards on the ground."It's going to be very important to put this loss behind us and focus on the playoffs," Johnston said. "The playoffs are what matter most and getting to that final game. I feel good bouncing back from last year and what they did to us (66-8) and come back here and I feel we got some respect."Loyola 21 3 14 7 -- 45Deer Lodge 3 0 0 14 -- 17L -- Danner Linhart 15-yard pass from Matt McHugh (Eric Williams kick), 9:46L -- Marty Pigeon 51-yard run (Williams kick), 6:21 DL -- Lukas Bucholtz 30-yard field goal, 1:20L -- Zach Hollenbeck 97-yard pass from McHugh (Williams kick), :12 2nd QuarterL -- Williams 17-yard field goal, 0:00 3rd QuarterL -- Hollenbeck 3-yard pass from McHugh (Williams kick), 6:45L -- Linhart 10-yard from McHugh (Williams kick), 3:11 4th QuarterL -- Tony Madsen 5-yard run (Art Petit kick), 6:33 DL -- Tristen Clark 3-yard pass from Ethan Johnston (Bucholtz kick), 4:36DL -- Jacob Simpson 50-yard pass from Johnston (Bucholtz kick), 0:00Individual StatsRushingLoyola: Tony Madsen 13-66, Marty Pigeon 10-72, Matt McHugh 7-(-7), Stephen Sellman 2-6, Peter Mitzel 1-0; Deer Lodge: Clay Applegate 10-20, Ethan Johnston 3-8, Tristen Clark 3-19, Dylan Roselles 2-7.PassingLoyola: Matt McHugh 18-25-0-311; Stephen Sellman 1-1-0-5; Deer Lodge: Johnston 19-37-1-288.ReceivingLoyola: Patrick Kosena 5-66, Danner Linhart 3-41, Zach Hollenbeck 6-148, Madsen 2-5, Forestt Cooper 1-47,Pigeon 1-4, Tommy Tirrell 1-5; Deer Lodge: Tristen Clark 9-147, Jacob Simpson 3-92, Mitchel Odden 2-11, Tennyson Miller 3-13, Andrew Pierson 1-6, Applegate 1-19.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Montana Standard (Butte, Mont.)
