The decision included a list of the banned pesticides for domestic purposes as well as those used as veterinary pesticides, in addition to agricultural pesticides, the use of which has been strictly restricted.UAE SPENDING DHS1.121BN ON CONSTRUCTION OF FIVE HOSPITALS: The UAE public works ministry has announced it is implementing five projects, worth a total of Dhs1.121bn, for the health ministry in various areas in the country, Gulf Today has reported. The projects include construction of the Maternity and Women's Hospital in Sharjah at a total cost of Dhs390m, 96 percent of which has been completed. This is besides the construction of the Mother and Child Healthcare Centre at a cost of Dhs33m, the Shaam Hospital project in Ras Al Khaimah, which is being constructed at a cost of Dhs85m, the Dhs600m, 272-bed capacity Al Amal Hospital for Mental Health project in Dubai, and the Healthcare Centre project in Al Hamediya costing Dhs13m.SAUDI VICTIMS OF TAINTED BABY MILK TOLD THEY CAN SUE FONTERRA: The Saudi Food and Drugs Authority (SFDA) has said customers who can prove they have been harmed by the contaminated baby milk that was taken off the market on August 5 can sue Fonterra, the producer of Similac Gain Plus 3 baby milk, Arab News has reported. Issam Abdulhadi, vice president of Abbott Middle East, said some 500,000 packs of Similac Gain Plus 3 were withdrawn from local markets. "The number of imported packs amounted to 530,000, so there are 30,000 packs still missing," said Abdulhadi.136 SAUDI PRIVATE HEALTH CARE FACILITIES SHUT DOWN IN 2012 OVER VIOLATIONS: The Saudi health ministry has proposed amendments to article 7 of the Private Health Facilities System, in a mini storageid to curb some doctors' malpractices that exploit patients financially, including prescribing unnecessary tests and X-rays, Arab News has reported. Authorities are currently studying the proposal, said Ali Al-Zawawi, the ministry's undersecretary for private health care sector affairs. Last year, the ministry recorded 1,625 violations and shut down a total of 136 private health facilities and pharmacological services across the kingdom.SAUDI ARABIA FLOATS TENDER FOR EQUIPMENT, FURNITURE FOR JEDDAH HOSPITAL: A tender has been floated by the Jeddah Health Affairs Department (JHAD) for procurement of furniture and equipment for 300-bed east Jeddah hospital, Arab News has reported. The contract, valued at about SR241m, will be awarded to firms specialising in the area concerned, said JHAD.AUS TO STUDY AIR POLLUTION IN UAE: The American University of Sharjah (AUS) has launched a one-year research to study the role of ozone and volatile organic compounds in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, Khaleej Times has reported. The research team will work in collaboration with the University of Miami in Florida to provide new insights into the country's air quality and seeks to investigate seasonal and wind transport effects of pollutants on air quality.SHARJAH'S AL QASIMI HOSPITAL PLANS TO DOUBLE CARDIO FACILITIES: Sharjah's Al Qasimi Hospital has unveiled plans to expand the Cardiothoracic Surgery Centre in the hospital to cope with more patients from Sharjah and the other northern emirates, Gulf News has reported. The plan includes increasing the number of medical teams so that they can perform surgeries on a daily basis, whether these are pre-set procedures or emergencies.
